It is played every 4 years, and only the countries with international credibility, from List A, are involved in these matches. Australia and England played the first ODI on 5th January 1971 at Melbourne Cricket Stadium. Australia won the match by 5 wickets, and it started a revolution in cricket history. Kerry Packer introduced the rival World Series Cricket Competition, and it included ODIs too. The International Cricket Council(ICC) maintains the ICC ODI Rankings of each player.
Rules to remember while playing ODI
- The ODI is played between two teams, where both teams have 11 players each, including batsman, bowler and wicket keeper.
- The team batting first set a particular target during the stipulated overs in the first inning. If the over is not completed yet, it is played until all the players are out. Each bowler has to play for 10 overs, and even fewer overs when the weather conditions are not good.
- In the second innings, the other team has to score more than the target to win the match. And the bowling team has to make all the players all out before they reach the score.
- If at the end of the innings, both teams have scored the same, and the second batting team has played all the overs, and all the wickets have been taken. The match becomes a tie.
- During the first 10 overs of a particular innings, the bowling team has to keep at most two players outside the 30-yard circle.
- There will be only 4 fielders who will be outside the 30-yard circle between the 11-40 overs.
- During the final 10 overs, there will be only five fielders that are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.
