- The Dr DY Patil Sports Academy was established in the year 2007 by Dr. Vijay Patil to create a space for premier sports academies to flourish globally. He had an ambitious vision to support the growth of all the sports such as cricket, tennis,badminton etc.
- This stadium was designed and created by Hafeez Contractor at approximately Rs 1 billion and eventually inaugurated on 4th March, 2008.
- This academy has been the host stadium of two IPL finals; one in 2008 and one in 2010.
- The first ever match ever played at this stadium was the IPL match when Mumbai Indians played against Delhi Capitals. And it became the home ground of Mumbai Indians.
