The Ranji Trophy is India’s one of the premier domestic first- class cricket championships. It is organised annually by the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI). It was organised for the first time in 1934-1935 and renamed after Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhiji. He was the first Indian player to be a part of international cricket. In 2018-19, the BCCI made changes in the tournament. The Maharashtra cricket team is one of the original teams of the Ranji Trophy championships. It started playing in the year 1934-35. It won its first Ranji trophy in the year 1939-40 when it defeated United Province(now Uttar Pradesh).
The local team is separated into three states- Maharashtra,Mumbai and Vidarbha. That makes it quite challenging for the Maharashtra team to compete and consistently bring good players. Kerala Cricket Team
The Travancore-Cochin team, now the Kerala team started playing in the year 1957-58. Though it hasn’t won a ranji trophy, it has been a tough competitor to the other teams. It became the first runner up in the 2024-25 Ranji trophy championship losing to Vidarbha in the final match. It made its first quarterfinal appearance in the year 2017-18. Over the years,Kerala has given brilliant players from its state who played for the National cricket team and contributed to the success. Players such as S.Sreesanth who was a fast bowler in the Test matches and ODIs and Sanju Samson who is the current player in the T20Is and ODIs have been a key contributor.
