There is a cricketer who makes selectors appear so smart way ahead of the time when the team will even discuss whether or not to pick him. Nitish Kumar Reddy is that cricketer. After being left with the dilemma of either taking his son out of Visakhapatnam to develop his cricketing talent or forego the job, Mutyala Reddy resigned his job and remained in Visakhapatnam. His second match was against Delhi where he went on to score 74 off 35 at a strike rate of 217 alongside figures of 2/23 to pick up Player of the Match award. This performance earned him a spot on the India selectors’ radar ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad.
Nitish got the call for his Test debut in Perth on 22 November 2024. Scoring 41 in India’s first innings and 38 not out in India’s second – both were pretty sedate knocks. Add on to this his century at the MCG later in the series against Australia. Coming in at eight and India being blasted all around the ground, Nitish ended up making one of only 114 second innings to score his first Test century. Highest score by a batsman coming in at eight or lower for his Test innings at the MCG in the history of the game. Picked up 5 wickets across the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
Nitish received his first BCCI central contract alongside Abhishek Sharma and Harshit Rana – a Grade C contract with an annual worth of Rs 1 crore – in April 2025. Upon his century at the MCG, his list of clientele would only grow: Puma India officially announced him as a brand ambassador; represents Dream11, Mountain Dew, Country Delight, Wrogn (Sports watch brand) and ARC (Athlete Recovery Companion) already. Furthermore, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu presented him with a 25 lakh check following his cultural impact on winning a game in his home state.
Early Cricket Life and Domestic Career
At the age of five, Nitish picked up a plastic bat, and observed senior players training at the Hindustan Zinc grounds. He was also spotted at a young age by former Indian selector MSK Prasad during Under-12 and Under-14 tournaments and enrolled into the Andhra Cricket Association academy in Kadapa where he was coached by Kumaraswamy, Krishna Rao and Watekar.
His record in terms of age group is phenomenal. He scored 1,237 runs, in total, including an innings of 441 off 345 balls against Nagaland, and 26 wickets, in the 2017-18 Vijay Merchant Trophy. The record of run was a tournament record and the performance won him the BCCI Jagmohan Dalmiya Award of Best Under-16 Cricketer in the 2017-18 season. He is the first player of the Andhra Cricket Association to be awarded the same.
His first senior domestic appearance was on January 27, 2020, to play Andhra versus Kerala in the Ranji Trophy. His List A debut was made on February 20, 2021, against Vidarbha in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and his T20 debut came on November 4, 2021, against Andhra against Jammu & Kashmir in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the recent Ranji Trophy cricket, he has scored total 366 with average of 36.60 including 25 wickets with a highest score of 159.
IPL Career – Season by Season
At the 2023 IPL auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad bid Nitish Kumar Reddy Rs 20 lakh, representing their belief in his potential in the long-term instead of his immediate preparedness. In 2023, he was essentially introduced to the game: he played two games and bowled five overs, but never had a bat.

IPL 2024: The Breakthrough Season
Everything changed in 2024. With a decent run in the XI, Nitish played 13 games and ended with 303 runs with a strike rate of 142.92 – numbers which do not necessarily reflect the importance of a number of those innings to the season of SRH. His 64 over Punjab Kings assisted SRH to emerge the winners by a single run. There was a two-run win, which was secured with his unbeaten 76 against Rajasthan Royals. Both were games of which SRH had no business to win without him.
He also pitched in with the ball where he registered a match winning spell of 2/17 where he dismissed Tristan Stubbs and Rishabh Pant. SRH made the final of the IPL 2024 and Nitish Kumar Reddy won the Emerging Player of the Year award of the season. SRH had agreed to pay him a total of Rs 6 crore even before the 2025 mega auction.
IPL 2025: A Challenging Season
The 2025 season proved to be a blow. Nitish only made 182 runs at a rate of 118.95 and scored just two wickets at an economy of 9.40. This was explained later in the campaign, when he had been dealing with a neck spasm and a left quadriceps injury that had caused him problems in his preparation, and his capacity to bowl at full effort. The injuries also cost him a spot in the selection of India on the T20 World Cup squad to be held in 2026, instead being replaced by Shivam Dube.
Nitish Kumar Reddy IPL 2026 Stats and Latest Matches
IPL 2026 has been an emphatic personal reaction to disappointment of the past season. At an average of 27.57 and a strike rate of 160.83, Nitish has a total of 193 on nine matches so far, having taken six wickets as a new-ball bowling option. His efforts have seen him make a cameo of 39 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders (four fours, a six) and make key contributions in the middle-order in the victories of SRH over Mumbai Indians and over Rajasthan Royals.
On May 3, 2026, he was declared unavailable due to illness, and missed the SRH vs KKR match. When Captain Pat Cummins threw the ball over and confirmed that Nitish had missed the game due to sickness and not an injury which is a more encouraging situation. The management of SRH said that he would be a first-choice playing XI option in 2026 and the numbers of nine games above all, especially the strike rate of 160.83 to that of 118.95 in 2025 and 2026 respectively confirm the fact of improvement.

The current speed of the bowling by Nitish Kumar Reddy is in the range of 135 to 140 km/h. His major weapons of bowling are the back-of-length delivery that cramps the right-handers, the hard-length bouncer and a slower ball which he disguises successfully. He also represents SRH with a new ball in T20 cricket, which not only gives him a role other than his batting. He is a right-handed middle-order striker who plays with a high backlift using clean timing through the off side. His temperament is worth noting, the MCG Test century at number eight showed that he is able to build an innings when under pressure as opposed to just simply hitting hard and hoping.
