M. Chinnaswamy Stadium History and Development

The laying of foundation stone of the stadium was done in 1969 with the assistance of Govt. of Karnataka and the actual construction commenced in 1970. Matches were first played in the first class format in this venue during the 1972-73 domestic season, and it was given Test status in 1974 when India played West Indies.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association renamed it in his honor as the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, and it was formerly called the Karnataka State Cricket Association Stadium. The Karnataka State Cricket Association originally called it the Karnataka State Cricket Association Stadium and renamed it after lawyer M.Chinnaswamy Stadium from Mandya, who is one of the founding members of the Mysore State Cricket Association. He is also the former president of BCCI (1977-80).

The first Test match here was between India and West Indies in November 1974. It was an historic match as it brought to the world the debut of West Indies greats Viv Richards and Gordon Greenidge playing Test cricket.

India and Sri Lanka played their first ODI in 1982 here while the first Twenty20 International was played in 2012 between India and Pakistan.

The stadium became even more popular after the launch of the IPL in 2008 as it became the home ground of Royal Challengers Bengaluru. It is the first time the first-ever IPL match was played here.

It has hosted ICC Cricket World Cup, domestic final, IPL classics, women’s international and even Miss World 1996 contest over the years.

The stadium provides top-of-the-range facilities and infrastructure for the players, officials, media and spectators.

It features state-of-the-art dressing rooms, hospitality boxes, media rooms, practice nets, indoor facilities, corporate seating areas, restaurants and VIP lounges.

The sub-air drainage system facilitates the drainage of water quickly and allows the ground to dry in 10–15 minutes following the interruption of rain.

M. Chinnaswamy Stadium Pitch Report

M.Chinnaswamy Stadium Pitch ground report

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is one of the most batter-friendly cricket grounds in India. Batters tend to dominate matches here because of the short boundaries, fast outfields and altitude factor. Surface typically provides good bounce and carry, and is suitable for offensive play. The new ball might allow a little movement for fast bowlers but batting will be easier with the old ball. Spinners normally tangle due to the smaller boundaries, but slower spinners with good variations can be quite effective in middle overs.
