The Indian Premier League has always been a batting show, but every season bowlers take the show. The Purple Cap is the highest honour that a bowler can receive on an individual basis in the IPL. It’s handed to the season’s top wicket taker and whosoever wears it in the arena throughout the tournament will be a manifestation of bowling prowess. The Purple Cap race has been a thrilling one in IPL 2026, the 19th edition of the league, with some of the most memorable bowling spells in the history of the IPL.

What Is the Purple Cap In IPL?

The bowler with the maximum wickets in all matches of an IPL season wins the Purple Cap. The leading wicket taker in the tournament can wear the physical cap in the matches – it is an ever-changing honour. The last player remaining with it at the end of the season retains it indefinitely.

If two bowlers have the same number of wickets, it would be simple to break the tie — the bowler with the better economy rate will retain the ‘cap’. This rule has become a crucial factor, besides wicket tally, in the quest for economy in the Purple Cap chase. The idea was first mooted in the first season of IPL 2008 and has since been a riveting sub plot in each IPL season.

IPL 2026 Purple Cap Race: Current Standings

The IPL 2026 playoff series has come to its peak, and the Purple Cap rivalry has never been more fierce. The veteran bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the top scorer for Royal Challengers Bengaluru with 24 wickets in 14 league stage matches. Gujarat Titans’ Kagiso Rabada is level on 24 wickets in 14 games. But, that doesn’t mean that Bhuvneshwar has lost the Purple Cap due to his better economy rate, a sign of his disciplined and intelligent bowling pace throughout the season.

The other players who have been going strong for the top are Rajasthan Royals’ Jofra Archer (21 wickets) and Chennai Super Kings’ Anshul Kamboj (21 wickets). At the bottom of the table, Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Kartik Tyagi, who made his debut in the IPL last season, has claimed 18 wickets while debutant Praful Hinge of Sunrisers Hyderabad made his name by picking up three wickets in the first over of an innings. After his performance in the Qualifier 1, RCB’s top ten wicket-taker Rasikh Salam got the nod and Sunil Narine fell from the list.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar: The Man Wearing the Cap

Bhuvneshwar kumar comeback is one of the most captivating stories in IPL 2026. Bhuvneshwar’s, who has won the Purple Cap twice (2016 and 2017), has come back to his best in RCB jersey. Since then, he has been the most complete bowler of the season, with the power to swing the ball early, be able to alter his tempo and get a yorker in at the end.

During the league stage of IPL 2026, his bowling performance against Delhi Capitals (3/5) was perhaps the highlight of his career. In the same match, the duo of Josh Hazlewood (4/12) and this player put on the same performance and went on to destroy DC for merely 75 runs, which was one of the lowest in IPL history. It was down to 13-6 in powerplays at one point, a record low for a full game for DC. That match personified the reason why Bhuvneshwar has been so tough this season to come to the crease.

Kagiso Rabada: Chasing Glory with a Rival

Gujarat Titans’ Kagiso Rabada has drawn in the league stage wickets for wicket. South African express pacer is one of the feared bowlers of the world cricket and his consistency in 14 matches has been appreciated. Rabada’s top wicket tally in IPL 2020 in Delhi Capitals’ Purple Cap (with 30 wickets) means he is still in the mix as a strong wicket taker in the IPL. He is a threat in big games with his speed, aggression, and playoff toughness. If GT finishes the Qualifier 2 round, then Rabada has the potential of getting more games to catch up with Bhuvneshwar which keeps the race open.

Notable Bowling Moments of IPL 2026

Apart from the top two clash, there have been some incredible spells in the bowlers’ book of IPL 2026. On his maiden IPL season debut, Praful Hinge of the Sunrisers Hyderabad became an overnight sensation with a hat trick in the first over of a 19-year-old innings against Rajasthan Royals, which was the first time in the tournament that a bowler managed to take three wickets in the first over. The relative new boy Anshul Kamboj (CSK) has been a steady performer, making an impact in the top four nearly all season, with pace and smart changes. Jofra Archer’s fitness and firepower have been a huge asset for Rajasthan Royals and with his 21 wickets he has proven why he is among the best T20 pacers around the world.

Purple Cap Winners: A Historical Timeline

  • The Purple Cap has been won by some of the greatest bowling talents the game has seen.
  • Sohail Tanvir from Rajasthan Royals started the award with a bang in 2008 with 22 wickets in 11 matches, including an all-time high six-of-14 against CSK. It was won by RP Singh in 2009 and Pragyan Ojha was the first spinner to wear the cap in 2010.
  • Dwayne Bravo is the most Purple Cap winner with 2 wins (32 wickets in 2013 and 26 wickets in 2015), both with the Chennai Super Kings. His 32 wickets in 2013 is the joint-best wicket haul in the history of the IPL, with him sharing the record with Harshal Patel who had 32 wickets in 2021.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the first bowler to win two successive Purple caps, in 2016 for Sunrisers Hyderabad and 2017 as well. This was the closest Purple Cap finish since Mohammed Shami had the best figures in 2023 with 28 wickets for Gujarat Titans. It was also won by Harshal Patel the second time in 2024, marking the first time a player has won it twice for different teams.
  •  The award was most recently won by Prasidh Krishna of Gujarat Titans who has grabbed 25 wickets in the league.Prasidh Krishna of Gujarat Titans won the award most recently with 25 wickets in IPL 2025.

Why is the Purple Cap so Important?

The Orange Cap allows for some big innings, but the Purple Cap requires consistency over the course of a whole season. A bowler should bowl in power and death, in the middle, with restricted fielding and against the fastest batters in the world, on a batsman-friendly surface, with the two bounce rule in effect. The Purple Cap is a testament to a bowler’s mental toughness, skill variety and match reading skills after 14 or more match situations.

All spells will now impact the leaderboard in IPL 2026, as the playoffs have begun. While Bhuvneshwar has a small lead on economy, Kagiso Rabada, if Gujarat Titans manage to come over the hump, could match him on wickets. The Purple Cap winner of the final edition of IPL 2026 will have taken all the wickets in the most competitive and exciting bowler’s duel in modern T20 cricket.
